About Toro

Toro is Stephanie Johnson and Karen McDonnell, two strategists who bring complementary skills in facilitation, research, communications, business and project planning, organizational change and engagement.

For more than 20 years, we’ve worked alongside Indigenous Nations and organizations, public institutions, businesses and community partners. Our work spans Indigenous self-determination and governance, reconciliation, organizational and systems change, strategic and business planning, and large-scale initiatives involving multiple partners and perspectives.

We bring the questions, the process and the skills that help people find the answers together. We listen and learn. We research. We ask good questions—sometimes difficult ones. We bring kindness and love to the way we work. We create the conditions for people to think, talk and work through complexity together, then help turn what emerges into something clear, practical and possible.

Our approach is rooted in relationships. We believe meaningful work starts with listening, curiosity and respect for the knowledge people already hold. We don’t impose solutions or arrive with a predetermined destination. We build the process alongside the people who will ultimately carry the work forward.

For more than two decades, we’ve had the privilege of learning and working alongside Elders, Knowledge Keepers, leaders, educators, families and communities. Those relationships and teachings continue to shape who we are and how we work.
